Congrats and one Q for you: why is THE BITCH more expensive than your other ebooks? I've never expected it'd cost so much.
It's a different publisher for one and a publisher who only takes on what they feel to be great books and not just books they feel will sell. They're very, very selective with their titles. Also, they spend far more time and money on getting their books ready and converted to ebook status than just about anyone else. In other words, they strive for a quality product that's not matched by others. I can't begin to list how much more time and expense they've gone through for this book, but it's far, far more than anything I've experienced.
And, compared to most legacy publishers who also offer ebook versions of their writer's books, they're about 2/3 of the prices normally charged for those.
I guess they feel that a quality book is worth at least a cup and a half of coffee at Starbucks.
It's all in the eye of the beholder. I've owned a couple of bookstores, and saw people holding up books of the same price and "weighing" them in their minds to figure out the best deal for their buck. Kind of grading literature by the pound or number of pages, I guess. Something like a big vampire book would be worth more than Camus' "The Stranger" to that sort of reader, I guess.
To Ray: Bare Knuckles Press doesn't publish discount fiction. We take great pride in our ebooks from the high quality cover art to the InDesign format to our extensive editing. A lot of love & thought goes in to these books, and we believe that Les' book among our others has earned the right to cost more than an egg sandwich at McDonalds, yet still less than two Vanilla Latte's at STARBUCKS. Last book i bought of Lee Child was $11 on Kindle and as far as I'm concerned Les belongs on that level to say the least.
Les, the new book looks fantastic. After seeing the comments about price, I was expecting $11-$15,I was pleasantly surprised it was only $8. I believe $8 is a very reasonable price to pay for a quality product. I'm very excited to read the book, and will be heading over to Amazon now to purchase a copy.
By the way, if anyone has an Amazon Prime membership you can barrow the book for free. You can't get any cheaper then that.
Thanks, PokerBen. Hope you enjoy it. There's lots of debate going on about the price of ebooks, but in general my thought is that at least some writers are undervaluing their work. The solution is easy--pay the price if you think it's worth it and don't if you don't.
Les, I see your point. Eight bucks for a book is certainly less than usual ten for a ebook from one of Big Six and it's probably the cost of couple of coffees at Sturbucks, but let me show you my point. I am not a citizen of UK or US, so my month income is far less than income of an average American. 8 dollars are expensive for me. And it's a e-book, so there won't be a hard copy that I will be able to order a used copy (with shipping it costs usually 6 bucks). Thus, the only chance to buy a copy for me is to wait, maybe, for a moment when a publisher will drop the price for a day or two.
Hi Ray--thanks so much for explaining and I certainly understand! Don't know if the price will be dropped or if so, when, but kind of doubt it for this one. But, if it happens, I'll be sure to let you know, okay? That's all out of my control.
BTW, I'm sure you know this, but in case you don't, you can get virtually any book ever printed for a buck or two through www.abebooks.com. I've found sometimes people aren't aware of them and that you can get almost any book, including textbooks, very inexpensively. They're used, but whatever condition they're described as being in can be trusted. Just have to be sure you order from a source where the postage won't be a lot.
Good luck and Merry Christmas!
I'm dying to know where you live, but won't ask...
Les,
I'm aware of abebooks. I regularly order from it. A book usually with shipping costs 6-7 bucks (dollar for a book and the rest for delivery), so it's not that cheap in the end.
BTW, i'm from Russia,
http://longwalkwithbooks.blogspot.com/ - that is my English-language blog, and next year I hope I'll read and review The Perfect Crime and Just Like That.
Merry Christmas! (though we in Russia we'll be celebrating Christmas on January 7)
